Frequently asked questions

Do I charge HST on sales to customers in other provinces?+

Generally, GST/HST is charged at the rate that applies where the goods are delivered. HST is 13% in Ontario; other provinces have different rates, and some have their own provincial sales tax with separate registration rules.

When do I need to register for HST?+

You generally must register once your taxable sales exceed $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. You can register voluntarily before then to claim input tax credits on business purchases.

How are Shopify and Amazon payouts recorded?+

Payouts arrive net of fees, refunds and chargebacks, so recording only the deposit understates both your sales and your expenses. Platform reconciliation records gross sales, fees and refunds separately and matches them to your bank deposits.

Why does inventory accounting matter?+

Your cost of goods sold, and therefore your profit and tax, depends on what your inventory cost and what was still on hand at year-end. Accurate inventory records also show which products are worth reordering.
